After exploring Sennen Cove we decided to try another beach. We googled which beaches were near by and Porthgwarra popped up. Neither of us had heard of it before but the pictures looked good so we put the postcode in the sat nav and off we went.
The drive is quite windy and narrow down to Porthgwarra, beware oncoming tractors and potatoes in the room from a nearby farm! It’s worth the hairy drive though as it’s a lovely little place with a beautiful coved beach. Porthgwarra is close to Porthcurno and situated within the St Aubryn Estate. There’s a couple of lovely looking holiday cottages, a car park and small coffee shop with outdoor seating. You park your car and then pay for a ticket at the cafe – £2 which isn’t too bad given it’s effectively for all day parking should you wish to take your time here.
We made our way down to the beach – you have to walk down a cobbled relatively steep slope and then you’re on the sand. It’s only a small cove and there’s plenty of rocks to climb on and sit. We saw various couples having picnics and a pair of American’s taking so many pictures and selfies it felt like we were watching a full blown photo shoot! It is a great spot for some nice views and pictures though and of course we were sure to get some too! There’s some cave and coved areas which you can climb and explore too if you fancy it.
Apparently there are some scenes from the TV series Poldark filmed here in Porthgwarra. I can imagine the place would have been rammed with the crew – it’s not a huge place!
